Gisborne, New Zeland (Aotearoa)

February 4, 2023

Black, billows of steam floated past the window as we set off on our steam train ride to a local school. We passed by rowing crews on New Zealand’s shortest river, farms, and logging trucks. Horses, cows, and sheep fled as the train chugged down the tracks before stopping to watch us speed by. The scenery was beautiful. Zuiderdam came into view, floating in the farmland.

Once at the school, students dressed in traditional clothing performed songs and dances they had learned. Afterwards we were able to visit with them. The student I talked with was in 5th grade and says her favorite thing is being able to learn the songs and dances and perform for visitors. She and the other performers gave up a day of their summer holiday to come and perform for us – students in Gisborne had not yet returned to school as their summer holiday begins in December and ends in early February.

We were able to take some time to explore the train and see its steam engine.

As we pulled away, the children waved goodbye, most now sporting the tour stickers from the tourists.

A horse and its rider challenged the train to a brief race. I’m not quite sure who won.

When we returned, we enjoyed some local seafood and chips before boarding the tender back to the ship.

Earlier that morning, we were among the first people to see the morning sunrise. Gisborne has the privilege to be the first in the world to greet the sun each day. Many people come on January 1 to be the first to see the sun in the new year.

Interesting that this is the first place to welcome each new day - and year!
