Sea Day - Fort Lauderdale and the Everglades

Today was a sea day. On sea days, I will use the time to find out a little about the places that I’ve visited or am going to.

Fort Lauderdale

The Port of the Everglades where Zuiderdam moored for the World Cruise is located in this city. Known as the “Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale is known for its 165 miles of inland waterways. You can even take a gondola ride on one of its canals! It also has 8 different public beaches.

The Hillsboro Beach has a statue honoring the “Barefoot Mailman”. Back in the 1800’s 11 mailman walked a seven-day route across 68 miles of sandy beaches to deliver the mail. True to the name of the port, the Everglades National Park is just a short distance from Fort Lauderdale.

Everglades National Park

The park celebrated its 75th birthday on December 6, 2022. In honor of their 75 years, they are challenging people to complete the “Iron Ranger Challenge” by doing 75 miles of physical activity. Can you meet the challenge?

The Everglades has only two seasons. A dry season and a wet season. The dry season started in December and lasts through April. The wet season will begin in May and continue through November. The Everglades provides a home for a wide variety of animals. One of the most well-known is the alligator. If you take an airboat ride through the Everglades, you are likely to see one. Below are some pictures from an airboat ride we took last winter when we visited the Caribbean.
